A little online feature born of a rant. Firstly, I don’t have a problem with remakes, and I get sick of the constant negativity towards them from the internet. And secondly, I get particularly aggravated when the term “remake” gets attached to films to which it doesn’t apply. A case in point: Nikolaj Arcel’s upcoming new version of Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca, which garnered universal online opprobrium as soon as it was announced, for supposedly being a “Hitchcock remake”. The ignorance of that just boggles my mind. So here’s what I wrote about that film, and a few others. I’ve just realised that David Fincher’s version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo probably belonged here too. Maybe I’ll add it.
